Sargassum at Anse Chastanet (Soufrière): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Pristine, go

Anse Chastanet opens just north of Soufrière on Saint Lucia's west coast, wedged between wooded hills and deep water. A reef reachable straight from the shore has made it a magnet for divers and snorkellers, far more than a simple lounging beach.

A weed landing changes everything when you come to put your head underwater, so each morning this page issues a 0 to 5 rating for Anse Chastanet and the western sector, map included. Enough to time your fin session, or the drive over from Soufrière, just right.

What to know about this beach

Facing due west, the cove turns its back on the Atlantic swell and on the rafts the trade winds walk from east to west: those pile into Dennery, Praslin or Micoud on the far side of the ridges. The heights above Soufrière extend that shelter right down to the shoreline.

The cove is short and pinched between two headlands, so any deposit tends to concentrate rather than spread. What really sets it apart from nearby beaches is underwater visibility: a few mats offshore are enough to cloud the coastal fringe, hence the value of a check before planning a dive. Sugar Beach, further south between the Pitons, belongs to the same western sector.

Frequently asked questions

Does sargassum often spoil diving at Anse Chastanet?

Rarely: the cove faces due west, leeward, and its sector is among the most spared in Saint Lucia. Still, glance at the morning score before a session, since a murky fringe is enough to ruin snorkelling.

Why does the morning score matter twice as much here?

Because people come for what lies under the surface, often after a trip from Soufrière or beyond. A quick look at the 0 to 5 score saves you the journey when the water is loaded.

Anse Chastanet or Sugar Beach for the day?

Both belong to the western sector and usually show similar conditions. Anse Chastanet wins for exploring the seabed straight off the shore; Sugar Beach, set between the Pitons, for the scenery. The map decides during an episode.

Can a landing linger inside the cove?

Pinched between two headlands, the cove concentrates deposits on little sand, but the west coast usually flushes them fast. The daily score shows at a glance whether an episode is receding.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
