Sargassum at Cane Garden Bay (Tortola): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, dive in

Cane Garden Bay is probably Tortola's liveliest bay: a curve of sand on the north-west coast, beach bars, and an anchorage sailors know across the British Virgin Islands. It is the classic stop, the one shown first to newcomers.

For sargassum, one glance covers you before you walk down: its 0 to 5 rating, refreshed every morning for the bay and its sector, with a map placing Cane Garden Bay on the Tortola coast. It says whether the water is clean, whether mats are lurking offshore, or whether the shoreline is taking weed.

What to know about this beach

The bay opens west, backed by the steep slopes that tower over Tortola's north-west coast. That position puts it leeward of the easterly trades: the island's ridge and length act as a screen, and the flow crossing the archipelago from east to west serves the exposed facades first, Josiah's Bay on the north shore among them.

Shelter is not a guarantee, though. A mat slipping past the end of Tortola can be carried into the bay by a westerly shift or a coastal current, and the closed curve of Cane Garden Bay then holds a deposit longer than an open beach would: what drifts into the arc drifts out slowly.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cane Garden Bay see much sargassum?

Far less than Tortola's northern and eastern facades. Turned west and protected by the ridge, the bay stays out of the main flow. Episodes are occasional and usually tied to a wind or current shift.

Why can a deposit linger in the bay?

The curve of Cane Garden Bay closes on itself, so the water renews more slowly than along an open beach. A mat that enters the bay can hang around for a few days until the current flushes it out.

Does the rating also apply to the anchorage?

The rating describes the Tortola sector read at the Cane Garden Bay point, shoreline included. Boats at anchor generally see the same situation as the beach, with a slight offset depending on their spot in the bay.

How does it compare with Josiah's Bay on the same day?

Josiah's Bay faces north on the exposed side and intercepts the east flow well before Cane Garden Bay. The two ratings often diverge, and comparing them gives a good sense of the current direction of arrival.

When should you watch the bay more closely?

From spring to late summer, when Caribbean arrivals multiply. Even then, Cane Garden Bay usually stays usable: a quick look at the morning rating is enough to confirm before heading down.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
