Sargassum at Gold Rock Beach (Grand Bahama): today's conditions
Clear
Clean, dive in
Gold Rock Beach lies on the south shore of Grand Bahama, inside Lucayan National Park east of Freeport. Visitors come for the pine forest behind the dunes and for the huge sand flat that appears at low tide, a far wilder scene than the resort beaches of Lucaya.
Before you drive out, this page gives you the day's picture: a 0 to 5 rating for the shoreline, a map of Grand Bahama's southern sector and a reading refreshed each morning. You will know whether the flat is clean, whether rafts are drifting offshore or whether weed has started piling up.

What to know about this beach
Facing due south, the beach looks straight at the water that carries sargassum through the Bahamas. The drift works its way toward the Florida Strait, so the ocean-facing southern and eastern shores of the archipelago meet it first. Grand Bahama's south coast, from Lucaya to Taino and on to Gold Rock, stands in that front line whenever the flow leans in from the south-east.
The shape of the site matters too. The wide flat uncovered at low tide holds on to whatever the sea drops, so one visit can show spotless sand and the next a brown line along the high-water mark. Because Taino and Lucaya share the same exposure a few miles west, the sector rating usually moves for all three beaches at once.
Frequently asked questions
Does Gold Rock Beach get hit by sargassum often?
More readily than the sheltered bank-side beaches of the Bahamas. The south shore of Grand Bahama faces the drift heading for the Florida Strait and picks up arrivals early when it swings in from the south-east, though weeks can pass with nothing at all.
Does the tide change what I will find?
Noticeably. Low tide exposes a vast flat where any deposit spreads out and looks dramatic; high tide can lift part of it away again. Check the morning rating first, then factor in where the tide will be when you arrive.
Should I compare Gold Rock with Taino or Lucaya before going?
They sit on the same south-facing stretch and share one sector rating, so differences stay small. Gold Rock is wilder and less built up, which means a landing may stay visible on the sand for longer.
Is the trip from Freeport worth it on a middling rating?
Usually yes. Lucayan National Park offers the trail, the forest and the caves whatever the shoreline looks like, and a mid-range score generally means scattered strands rather than a continuous mat. Glance at the morning update before setting off.
