Sargassum at Pink Sands Beach (Harbour Island): today's conditions
Clear
All good
Pink Sands Beach stretches along the Atlantic side of Harbour Island, the little gem lying off northern Eleuthera next to Dunmore Town. Its rosy hue, created by shell fragments mixed into the grain, has made it one of the most photographed shores in the Bahamas.
To time your visit well, lean on the morning score, graded from 0 to 5 and renewed at first light, with the Eleuthera sector map as back-up. You will know whether the pink shoreline is spotless, whether rafts are prowling offshore or whether a landing already occupies the sand.
Pink Sands Beach on the sargassum map
What to know about this beach
The beach runs for miles facing east, in direct contact with the open Atlantic: within Eleuthera's layout it belongs to the front-line facade together with French Leave and Lighthouse, the shores that witness arrivals ahead of everyone else. When the drift bears down on the region, nothing stands between deep water and this strand.
The flip side lies across the island: Eleuthera's western coast, home to Ten Bay Beach, stays leeward and far calmer. Since Harbour Island is explored by golf cart, the sheer length of Pink Sands also gives you room to adapt on the spot, as one section can stay decent while another loads up with the day's currents.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pink Sands Beach often affected by sargassum?
It is one of Eleuthera's most exposed facades: due east, square onto the Atlantic, it sees arrivals first whenever the drift presses on the region. Between episodes, the shore returns quickly to its usual postcard state.
Does the sand stay pink during a landing?
The colour comes from tiny shell fragments blended into the grain, so it never goes away. A layer of weed can visually hide the tint along the wrack line, though, until the sea or a clean-up clears it off.
Is the whole length of the beach hit the same way?
Not always. Over several miles, currents rarely deposit evenly: one stretch can load up while another stays walkable. That is exactly what the sector map is for before you set out.
What if the score is high on the day of my visit?
Switch to Eleuthera's west side: Ten Bay Beach, tucked leeward of the island, escapes most of the flow. Dunmore Town and its lanes also make a fine morning while conditions improve.
When is the beach safest from weed?
Outside the Caribbean arrival window, which runs roughly from spring to late summer. Even in season, episodes alternate with clean spells, so the morning check remains your best tool.
