The shoreline faces west, toward the Caribbean Sea. Sargassum crossing the Atlantic travels with the easterly trade winds and meets Martinique's windward coast first, on the opposite side of the island from Schoelcher. Madiana therefore sits on the sheltered flank, inside the Caraïbe nord monitoring zone.
