Nogent beach (Sainte-Rose): sargassum conditions today

Today, September 1

Clear

Easy going

Nogent beach lines the northern edge of Sainte-Rose, at the western entrance of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. It faces northeast over shallow water, which has made it a family stop on this side of the island, a short drive from Cluny beach but in a very different marine setting.

This page follows sargassum at Nogent day by day: what was observed at first light, the matching 0 to 5 rating, and a map showing how the beach compares with the others around it before you commit to the drive. The calculation is redone every morning.

What to know about this beach

Nogent sits where the long barrier reef closing the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin starts to form a screen offshore. That reef absorbs much of the Atlantic swell energy before it reaches the shore, which explains the calm water compared with the open beaches of the same commune.

Where seaweed is concerned, a barrier acts as a filter rather than a wall. Mats carried on the easterly wind meet its outer face first: some of the load stops there, the rest slips through the reef gaps with the tide. Once inside, with weak currents and a northeast aspect that takes the prevailing wind head on, whatever entered is slow to leave again and gathers against the sand.

Frequently asked questions

Does the reef protect Nogent from sargassum?

Partly. The reef closing this bay stops a share of the weed offshore, but its gaps let the rest through, and the wind then carries it shoreward. The beach is filtered rather than sealed off.

How do I check conditions at Nogent the same morning?

This page shows the day's 0 to 5 rating and the matching map, both recalculated every morning. Two seconds are enough to know whether the outing holds or another beach is wiser.

Why does the northeast aspect matter here?

Because the trade wind usually blows from that quarter. A beach facing it directly receives whatever the wind pushes shoreward, including weed that has already entered the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin.

How does Nogent differ from nearby Cluny beach?

Cluny sits on the open Atlantic side with no reef in front, while Nogent gains the barrier's screen. Two neighbouring beaches can therefore show quite distant ratings on the same day.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
