Boca Chica sits behind a coral reef that all but closes a south-facing bay on the Caribbean side. The result is shallow, quiet water you can wade far into, and far less direct exposure to arrivals than the Atlantic coasts of the north and east.
The downside is familiar to every enclosed lagoon: water exchange is limited. Whatever comes in through the channels, sargassum included, leaves slowly and can sit in the corners of the bay for days after an episode. Being the westernmost point of this stretch, Boca Chica also receives mats already broken up by their long run along the coast. That westward drift is why arrivals here tend to register later than at the beaches around Bayahíbe.
