Playa Dorada sits inside a curve, backed by the hills of Puerto Plata under Pico Isabel de Torres, with a reef flat running offshore across its opening. That reef soaks up part of the Atlantic swell energy, which keeps the swimming moderate and the inner cove fairly quiet.
The trade-off is slower water exchange than on a straight coastline. A patch of weed that clears the reef spreads through the crescent and lingers. The northern aspect, meanwhile, keeps the beach off the main arrival corridor, which loads the eastern side of the island first.
