What to know about this beach
The beach faces due north onto the Atlantic, and that orientation is the key fact for sargassum here. Caribbean rafts drift west with the easterly trade winds, so the shores that collect them first and in bulk are the east and southeast facing coasts of the country, around Punta Cana and Bávaro. A north facing town beach sits off to the side of that main conveyor, which is why the Dominican north coast has historically seen far less of it.
That is a matter of odds, not immunity. During a large episode, or when the wind swings to the northeast and drives floating mats along the shoreline, weed can still reach Las Terrenas. Because the town frontage is open and shallow rather than a closed pocket bay, material tends to land along the tideline instead of stewing in a corner, so an arrival is obvious straight away.
