Sargassum at Playa Lindamar (Cayo Largo del Sur): today's picture

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, hit it

Playa Lindamar stretches along the southwestern shore of Cayo Largo del Sur, a low sandy cay sitting in the open Caribbean off Cuba's south coast. Visitors tend to spend their whole stay on the island, which lives for its beaches, so the state of the sand sets the tone for the day.

Playa Lindamar has its own tracking sheet: each morning the satellite pass yields a 0 to 5 rating, the southern Cuba sector appears on the map and the verdict is spelled out plainly. Clear shoreline, rafts on the move somewhere out there, or weed coming ashore as you read: the sheet says which.

What to know about this beach

Cayo Largo is part of the string of islets trailing off Cuba's southern flank. There is no mountain range and no large landmass to screen it: rafts crossing the Caribbean Sea on the east-to-west push of the trade winds travel straight past the cay, making this one of the most exposed corners of the whole destination.

The beach's southwest aspect takes some of the edge off. Lindamar does not stare into the easterlies, so a share of the drifting weed slips along the islet without grounding. On land this flat and narrow, however, everything hinges on a few degrees of swell or current: one raft may pass wide today and pile onto the sand tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cayo Largo del Sur get more sargassum than mainland Cuba?

The cay sits in the open Caribbean, directly on the path of rafts drifting westward, with no high ground to shelter it. Cuba's southern shore shares that exposure, but a low islet like Cayo Largo has no natural screen at all.

Does Playa Lindamar's southwest orientation really protect it?

Only partly. The beach does not face the trade winds head-on, so many rafts brush past without landing. A southerly swell or a turning current is still enough to push a whole bank onto the sand.

Which season is safest for a trip to Cayo Largo?

Caribbean arrivals usually run from spring to late summer, and winter tends to be the quiet stretch. Conditions shift quickly either way, so the morning rating on this page remains the best guide.

How do I check Playa Lindamar during my stay?

Open this page when you wake up: the rating for the beach and its sector is recalculated every morning. One glance before breakfast tells you whether the sand is worth heading to.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
