Sargassum at Playa Pesquero (Holguín): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Chill

Playa Pesquero lines the northern coast of Holguín province, in the municipality of Rafael Freyre, in eastern Cuba. Together with Guardalavaca and Esmeralda it forms the resort trio of this shoreline: large hotels set back from the sand and an Atlantic sea whose mood shifts with the current.

FanGass issues a daily bulletin for Pesquero: conditions receive their mark, from 0 to 5, first thing in the morning, the map covers the whole Holguín sector and a short note spells out what is visible (clean shore, patches offshore, an ongoing landing). Handy for timing your swim.

What to know about this beach

The Holguín coast holds the eastern portion of Cuba's Atlantic face: rafts committing to the island's north side pass these waters before running on toward the central cays, carried by the moving waters of the channel rather than by the trade wind alone. In season, the sector deserves genuine watching.

The beach itself points northwest, an angle that sets it off the most direct path: a few kilometres to the east, Playa Yuraguanal, squared to the north, takes the same pulses more bluntly. Between two notches of this indented coast, conditions can flip quickly; the sector map exists precisely to catch those contrasts.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Holguín coast receive sargassum before the cays?

Sitting further east on the Atlantic face, it often watches the drift go by first. That does not mean systematic landings: everything hinges on the current's path at the moment the rafts pass.

Does Pesquero's northwest bearing protect it?

It moves the beach off the drift's most direct axis without taking it out of play. A current bending landward, or several hours of northerly wind, is enough to bring algae onto this sand.

How does it compare with Playa Yuraguanal next door?

Yuraguanal opens squarely to the north and catches passing pulses more directly than Pesquero, which leans northwest. The two pages compare in a second on the Holguín sector map.

How do I plan a beach day in Rafael Freyre?

Glance at the Pesquero mark over breakfast: it has just been recalculated. If this stretch is loaded, the map immediately shows which neighbour in the sector is doing better that morning.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
