Sargassum at Playa Pilar (Cayo Guillermo): today's conditions
Clear
Chill
At the far end of Cayo Guillermo, in the Jardines del Rey archipelago, Playa Pilar lines up pale dunes and knee-deep water. Its name recalls Hemingway's boat, a regular in these waters; its fame rests on sand many rank as the finest in Cuba's northern cays. Most visitors come for the day from the hotels on Cayo Coco and Guillermo.
Before driving out to the point, glance here first: the sargassum situation is boiled down to a 0 to 5 rating, pinned on the map of the cays and renewed at every dawn. The record of recent days sits alongside, so the state of the beach never comes as a surprise at the end of the road.

What to know about this beach
Playa Pilar holds the western extremity of Cayo Guillermo, facing due north over the ocean. In this northern-cays zone (Cayo Coco, Guillermo, Santa María), sargassum is not a matter of head-on Antillean trade winds: it follows the corridor of the Old Bahama Channel beyond the chain of islets, and only the tongues bent back toward land end up on the sand.
Sitting at the end of the chain, behind Cayo Coco and the rest of Guillermo, Pilar enjoys a partial screening effect: the east-to-west drift meets the north-east-facing shores first, Playa El Paso among them, before rounding the point. The turquoise shallows in front of the beach slow rafts down too, and some ground there without ever reaching the edge of the dunes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Playa Pilar worth the trip even in sargassum season?
Most of the time, yes. Its spot at the end of the cay, tucked behind the north-east-facing shores, keeps direct arrivals rare. Just check the morning rating before setting out from your hotel.
Which gets weed first, Pilar or El Paso?
El Paso, as a rule. It is turned to the north-east, into the drift running along the cays, while Pilar, at the chain's end and facing due north, is only reached once a mat rounds the point.
Do the sandbars in front of the beach make a difference?
They do, acting like a sieve: part of any raft snags on the shallows before the shore. You may see strands in the water offshore while the beach itself stays perfectly usable.
Is there a better time of day to enjoy Pilar?
Morning, generally: the daily rating has just been computed and the breeze has not yet pushed in whatever floats. If the afternoon turns, the page's history shows whether the episode is a passing one.
