What to know about this beach
Shape does most of the work at Sosúa. Framed by two headlands and opening toward the north-west, the bay only ever gets a weakened swell: the water stays calm and shallow well out from shore, which is why families gather here and why snorkellers cross to the coral heads.
That shelter has a flip side. A cove exchanges its water slowly, so sargassum that clears the entrance piles up at the head of the bay and stays until wind draws it back out. Conversely, during a northerly swell episode that loads the region's open beaches, the narrow mouth limits how much gets in. That is why Sosúa, Cabarete and Playa Grande can post noticeably different scores on the same day.
