Sargassum at Sandy Point Beach (St. Croix): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Pristine, go

Sandy Point Beach stretches a long ribbon of pale sand across the south-western tip of St. Croix. The site is a protected refuge known for nesting sea turtles, and people come for bare, undeveloped sand whenever access is open.

This page watches the beach through one precise lens: sargassum. It shows a 0 to 5 rating set each morning for Sandy Point and its sector, a map of the south-western shore, and enough detail to time your visit for a clear window.

What to know about this beach

The point at Sandy Point closes the south-western corner of St. Croix, about as far from the east flow as this island allows. Facing south-west, the beach sits on the Caribbean side, leeward of the trade winds: rafts pushed from east to west must round the whole island before they can touch this sand, and most slide past offshore.

Its refuge status adds a twist: entry is regulated to protect the nesting season, and crowds stay thin. The exposed counterpart lies across the island at Chenay Bay. When that shore is receiving weed, Sandy Point usually enjoys a delay, and sometimes misses the episode altogether.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sandy Point Beach get much sargassum?

Rarely compared with the eastern facades of St. Croix. Its leeward position on the south-western tip forces rafts to travel around the island first. Deposits remain possible when currents push a mat back towards the Caribbean shore.

Can you visit Sandy Point all year round?

Access is regulated: the beach is a nature refuge that protects sea turtle nesting, so it is not open at all times. Check the opening conditions before planning the trip, then glance at the morning rating.

Why does Sandy Point's rating differ from Chenay Bay's?

The two beaches bracket the island on opposite facades. Chenay Bay, to windward, intercepts the east flow, while Sandy Point only sees what trickles around. On the same day their ratings can tell two different stories.

Does the sargassum season matter here?

Even at the heart of the season, from spring to late summer, Sandy Point remains one of the most sheltered points on St. Croix. Episodes tend to be shorter and further apart than on the exposed coast.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
