Sargassum at Taino Beach (Freeport): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

All clean

Taino Beach spreads its pale sand along the south coast of Grand Bahama, east of the Lucaya district on the Freeport side. Wide and family-friendly, loved by locals as much as by visitors, it hosts weekend picnics as readily as evenings around grilled fish.

Exposure like this rewards the prepared: Taino Beach wakes up to a rating on the 0 to 5 scale, a position on the sector map and a warning about anything brewing out at sea. Worth the ten seconds it takes before the cooler goes in the car.

What to know about this beach

Like its neighbour Lucaya Beach, Taino Beach faces south-east toward open ocean: it is one of the Bahamian coasts that rafts reach first when the flow bears from the south-east, well ahead of the sheltered bank and lagoon beaches elsewhere in the archipelago. No relief, no screening island here: the direction of the current decides everything.

Set between the hotel district of Lucaya to the west and the wilder coast running out toward Gold Rock, Taino Beach plays on its width: an average deposit usually leaves dry sand to settle on, and the play areas and beach shacks stay usable while the tide line gets cleared. Freeport residents, who know it by heart, simply shift their spot for the day.

Frequently asked questions

Does Taino Beach receive sargassum at the same time as Lucaya Beach?

Most often yes: same south-east orientation, same front line against the flow. The nuances play out stretch by stretch with the day's currents, and the sector map shows them each morning.

Is swimming with children still pleasant in season?

Often, yes: arrivals come in episodes, not continuously. Check the morning rating; when it sits low, the water at Taino Beach recovers its usual clarity and the sand its room for games.

When should Freeport expect landings?

The most active period runs from spring to late summer, when rafts circulate most off the south coast. The rest of the year, clear mornings become the norm again at Taino Beach.

Where to fall back if the south coast is loaded?

When Lucaya, Taino and Gold Rock all post high ratings, the whole southern front is usually being served at once. Better then to shift the swim by a day or two and follow the ebb on the map.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
