Sargassum at Carlisle Bay (Bridgetown): today's report

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, hit it

Carlisle Bay curves along the edge of Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. With yachts at anchor, beach clubs and wreck snorkeling just offshore, it is the island's city beach, shared by residents, cruise passengers and divers alike.

Carlisle Bay's sargassum file is reopened every morning: the day receives its 0 to 5 score, the full south coast sector spreads across the map and the recent history sits below. Water still clear, mats somewhere between horizon and beach, or weed already at the shoreline: the answer takes a second.

What to know about this beach

Barbados stands further east than any other island in the Lesser Antilles, directly in the path of the Atlantic flow that the trade winds drive westward. The eastern and south-eastern shores take those arrivals head-on; the southern shore, from Carlisle Bay down to Oistins, catches them at an angle. Facing south-west, Carlisle Bay sits at the sheltered end of that chain: immediately beyond it, the coastline turns into the Caribbean-facing west coast, from Paynes Bay to Speightstown, the island's leeward refuge.

That favourable position has limits. During major regional pulses, like the one that overwhelmed the whole southern façade in 2025, sargassum works its way west along the shore and eventually rounds the corner into the bay. Carlisle then tends to be reached last, and usually with less weed than Worthing or Dover saw earlier. Its wide sand bank and calm, enclosed water also change how a landing behaves: deposits linger near the waterline instead of being pulled back out to sea.

Frequently asked questions

Is Carlisle Bay the most sheltered beach on the south coast?

Within its sector, yes. Its south-west orientation and its position at the far end of the Carlisle Bay to Oistins chain mean rafts usually arrive here after the beaches that face due south. The leeward west coast begins just beyond the bay.

How often does sargassum actually reach Bridgetown?

Less often than the east and south-east of the island, which face the trade-wind flow directly. The bay mainly sees weed during large regional events, when the southern branch of the belt spills across the entire coast.

What happened here in 2025?

The south coast, Carlisle Bay included, was declared a disaster zone during the exceptional 2025 season. Episodes of that scale are exactly what the morning rating on this page is designed to flag early.

What is the quickest way to check the bay before going?

Use the score at the top of this page. It runs from 0 for clear water to 5 for a heavy stranding, and it is recalculated every morning from satellite imagery and local sector conditions.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
