Sargassum at Malaquite Beach, Padre Island National Seashore: today

Today, October 30

Clear

Pristine, dive in

Malaquite Beach sits inside the Padre Island National Seashore, the protected shoreline stretching south of Corpus Christi. There is no built seafront here, just dunes and a long natural strand, which is exactly why people make the drive: the Gulf without the resort.

Before you commit to the road, this page gives you the morning picture. Malaquite gets its own 0 to 5 score, recalculated at first light from satellite imagery, alongside a map placing it within the Coastal Bend sector.

What to know about this beach

The beach looks due east over open water. Between this sand and the Gulf of Mexico stands nothing at all: no screening island to windward, no enclosed bay. On such an exposed front, weed meets the shore head-on whenever the Gulf flow sets toward the coast.

Within its zone, Malaquite is the wild end of the spectrum. The postal address says Corpus Christi, yet the setting could not be further from Whitecap Beach, the city strand to the north; further on, Rockport hides inside Aransas Bay, in the lee of San José Island. Three very different situations share one sector, and their ratings can split on any given day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Malaquite hit harder than Whitecap Beach?

Both line the same open Gulf front, so the arrival line is shared. What differs is the setting and the day's currents, which can load one shore more than the other: each beach's morning score settles it case by case.

Why check the score before coming?

Malaquite takes commitment: you drive out from Corpus Christi into the National Seashore, and turning back costs real time. A quick look at the morning score spares you discovering a stranding on arrival.

Does the due-east orientation matter?

Yes. The beach takes head-on whatever the Gulf sends when the flow sets shoreward, with no relief to filter the rafts, unlike Rockport, sitting inside Aransas Bay behind San José Island.

When does the season reach the National Seashore?

Rafts enter Texas from the south and then climb northward. South Padre Island sets the tempo: once its beaches start scoring high, the Coastal Bend often follows within the season.

Does the whole Seashore coast react the same way?

The shoreline is long and straight, so it faces the open water quite uniformly. Day-to-day contrasts come from wind and currents, and the sector map shows where the current deposits sit.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
