Sargassum at Seawall Urban Park (Galveston): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

All good, go

Seawall Urban Park is the ribbon of sand at the foot of Galveston's great seawall, running beside the boulevard of the same name. Stairways drop straight from the sidewalk, with hotels and restaurants across the street: this is the island's urban beach, a towel's throw from town.

Skip the walk down and read the page instead: today's index from 0 to 5, a map setting this waterfront within its wider sector, and a refresh every morning. Clear sand, rafts offshore or a fresh deposit against the wall: it all shows here.

What to know about this beach

The park hugs the island's southeast face, squarely exposed to the Gulf of Mexico: along this ruler-straight shore, no cape or islet breaks the flow when it sets toward land. The sand ribbon is narrower than at the island's tips, so any deposit stands out instantly from the boulevard above.

What the spot offers is legibility: from the top of the wall, a stranding can be spotted at a glance before you ever reach the sand. In the Texas pattern, floating weed enters by the south of the state and works north, with Galveston closing the march; between Stewart Beach eastward and Jamaica Beach down the west end, the Seawall keeps the same arrival rhythm as the rest of the island.

Frequently asked questions

Can I judge the sargassum from the top of the seawall?

Yes, the parapet gives a clear view over the whole sand ribbon, but that means already being there. The online rating, recalculated each morning, exists precisely to spare the trip.

Is the Seawall better off than Stewart Beach or East Beach?

Not structurally: same southeast frontage, same exposure to the Gulf flow. The sand strip is simply narrower here, so an identical deposit stands out more.

Does the narrow strip concentrate the deposits?

At equal volume, a stranding takes up proportionally more room on a narrow sand band than on the big beaches at the island's tips. The effect is mostly visual: the sector rating stays the benchmark.

Which season should I watch for the seawall beach?

The months when arrivals that entered by the south of the state finally reach Galveston, in the warm part of the year. In winter the urban waterfront generally gets its clean sand back.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
