Sargassum at Port Aransas Beach (Mustang Island): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, dive in

Port Aransas holds the northern point of Mustang Island, in the Texas Coastal Bend: a fishing town turned resort where golf carts cross paths with rod-laden pickups, and where many visitors arrive on the ferry across the pass. The huge, drivable beach lines the town's entire eastern front.

Before boarding, look over the day's digest: Port Aransas Beach gets its grade, from 0 to 5, alongside the Coastal Bend map and a summary rebuilt every morning. It covers how the sand looks, whether mats are riding offshore and which way the sector is trending.

What to know about this beach

The town commands Aransas Pass, the inlet opening toward the inner ports: its jetties frame the entrance just north of the beach, which then unrolls its sand due southeast into the Gulf, nothing in the way out to the horizon. Exposure is head-on whenever the flow pushes coastward.

In the geography of arrivals, the Coastal Bend holds the middle rung: sargassum reaches South Padre first, then climbs toward Galveston, and Mustang Island sits along that route. The most telling local contrast is with Rockport, tucked inside Aransas Bay behind San José Island: sheltered water over there, the Gulf's full swell here.

Frequently asked questions

Does Port Aransas see sargassum before Galveston?

Generally yes: the Coastal Bend stands between South Padre, served first, and Galveston, reached later. Mustang Island therefore often receives weed before the northern coast.

How is it different from Mustang Island State Park further south?

Same water, same exposure: the ratings move together. The park, left undeveloped, lets deposits evolve with the tides, while the town front gets more attention.

Is nearby Rockport in the same boat?

No: Rockport shelters inside Aransas Bay, behind San José Island, away from the Gulf swell. It is the sector's sheltered exception, the opposite of Port Aransas's open beach.

Should I check the page before the ferry?

Yes, especially in season: the 0 to 5 rating, redone each morning, tells you whether the beach day holds up before you even join the ferry line.

Do the jetties at the pass change anything?

They frame the channel entrance north of the beach and can locally hold what drifts along the shore. The effect stays localized: the overall exposure does not change.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
