Sargassum at Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula: today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Chill, hit it

Crystal Beach lines up its stilt houses along the heart of Bolivar Peninsula, the long sand spit carrying the coast northeast of Galveston, across the pass. Cars roll on the flat, wide beach, and the whole place has an end-of-the-road feel you reach by ferry.

Check this page before crossing: it posts the current rating, graded from 0 to 5, the map tying Crystal Beach into the Galveston sector and a revision each morning. Enough to know whether the beach is running clean or loaded.

What to know about this beach

The peninsula separates two worlds: to the southeast, the open Gulf where sargassum drifts; on the back side, the quiet waters of East Bay. The beach itself belongs wholly to the Gulf: same aspect and same lack of shelter as the island beaches opposite, with nothing but open sea on the horizon.

Crystal Beach also marks the northeastern end of the Texas coastline FanGass covers: in the seasonal climb that carries weed from South Padre up toward Galveston, it stands at the very end of the run. The ferry across the pass links it straight to East Beach; the two shores face each other yet rarely behave identically on a given day, as the pass reshuffles the flows.

Frequently asked questions

Is Crystal Beach affected after Galveston?

It sits at the end of the seasonal climb, at the far northeast of the covered coastline, so weed normally arrives here at the tail of the run. A local blow can still shuffle that order on a given day.

Does the East Bay side of the peninsula get sargassum?

The bay behind the peninsula stays out of the Gulf swell: calm water, no ocean frontage. Strandings concern the Gulf-facing beach, the one this page follows.

Can you still drive on the beach during a stranding?

The sand stays wide and flat, but fresh windrows can make some stretches awkward. The morning rating helps you choose between the beach and another day.

Should I check the page before taking the ferry from Galveston?

That is the right reflex: the crossing is worth it, better done when the rating is low. The map shows both sides of the pass at a glance.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
