Sargassum at Playa Fundadores, Playa del Carmen: today's state

Today, September 1

Heavy

Shit's bad, skip it

Playa Fundadores fronts the park of the same name, at the point where Playa del Carmen opens onto the sea, just north of the ferry pier for Cozumel. It is the meeting place of the town centre, between the Portal Maya sculpture, the terraces and the constant flow of passengers.

This page follows sargassum at Playa Fundadores: what is being seen at the water's edge today, a 0 to 5 rating that sums up the day, and a coastal map for comparing with nearby beaches. Everything is renewed each morning, before the first crossings leave.

What to know about this beach

The beach looks east across the channel that separates the mainland from Cozumel, with the island on the horizon and the northbound current squeezed between the two. Sargassum mats travelling on that flow run along the Playa del Carmen shoreline before the wind presses them onto the sand.

The harbour works add a local twist. A jetty cuts across the longshore drift, so floating material close to shore jams against the structure instead of continuing along the coast, and the ground around the pier can hold more than the middle of the beach on the same morning. With the town centre right behind the sand, checking the shoreline in person costs no more than a short walk from the square.

Frequently asked questions

Why does sargassum reach Playa Fundadores?

It opens east onto the Cozumel channel, where current and trade winds push mats towards the coast. Nothing intercepts an arrival before it reaches the sand in the middle of town.

How do I check before catching the ferry?

The daily 0 to 5 rating and the map go up here each morning, which helps you decide whether to linger at Fundadores or head straight over to Cozumel on the next crossing.

Does the ferry pier change where weed gathers?

Yes. The jetty interrupts longshore drift and holds floating material near the shore, so the ground beside the structure can show heavier build-up than the rest of the beach on the same day.

Are the neighbouring beaches in the same state?

Often close, since the whole seafront shares the same eastern exposure. The map lets you compare Fundadores with Mamitas and the northern end of town before you move.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
