What to know about this beach
Like almost the whole mainland Riviera Maya coast, Punta Esmeralda faces east into the open sea, so trade winds drive drifting mats straight towards it. What makes it different is the shape of the shore. Instead of one long straight beach, there is a chain of small bays broken up by rock, with shallow ground and exposed limestone close in.
That structure matters. Weed arriving here wedges into the coves and against the rocky points rather than sliding along open sand, and it stays until the wind shifts. Mechanical clearing is awkward among the rocks. The practical result is that conditions can differ sharply from one cove to the next, over a few dozen metres, on the very same day.
