Pompano Beach holds the northern part of the Broward shoreline, between Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Hillsboro Beach in Florida. Its beach, easy to spot by the pier reaching out over the water, opens straight onto the Atlantic and continues on both sides of the structure.

What to know about this beach
At about 103 degrees, this beach angles more toward the southeast than its neighbors further down the coast. The difference matters: wind or swell out of the southeast finds a straighter path in here, pushing drifting mats toward the sand. The coast is still open Atlantic, with no sheltered face like the leeward shores of the Antilles.
The pier plays two roles. It is a vantage point first: from the deck you take in several hundred yards of shoreline and can pick out floating patches while they are still offshore. It is also an obstruction, since the pilings slow nearshore currents, and material can bank up on one side depending on which way the drift is running that day.
