Sargassum at Praslin Bay Beach (Praslin): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Light

A few patches, ok

Praslin Bay Beach nestles in a cove on Saint Lucia's east coast, between Dennery to the north and Micoud to the south. The hamlet of Praslin sits well off the tourist loop: people come for a raw Atlantic shoreline, green slopes and a sea worked by the wind.

Before driving out east, make it a habit: every morning this page publishes a 0 to 5 rating for the beach, the sector map and the short version of what it means. In seconds you know whether the bay is clear or whether the Atlantic dropped off weed overnight.

Praslin Bay Beach on the sargassum map

What to know about this beach

Like the whole of Saint Lucia's eastern facade, Praslin looks into the Atlantic along the exact axis of the trade winds. Sargassum rafts riding that flow make landfall on this coast, so Praslin bay shares front-line status with Dennery just to the north and Anse Mabouya on the Micoud side. No relief stands between the open ocean and this shore.

The beach's position deep inside a tight bay shades the picture day to day: depending on the current's angle, weed files past the entrance without turning in, or funnels inside and carpets the back of the cove. That is why Praslin can post a different rating from Dennery on the same morning, even though only a few kilometres separate the two bays.

Frequently asked questions

Does Praslin bay get as much sargassum as Dennery?

Both belong to the same Atlantic front and share the same arrival season. Day to day, each bay's geometry makes the difference: one can trap a mat while the other lets it slide by, hence occasionally distinct ratings.

When should I avoid the east coast around Praslin?

Arrivals concentrate from spring to late summer, at the height of the Caribbean season. Outside those months the bay enjoys clear spells, which the morning rating confirms before you make the trip.

How do I check Praslin Bay Beach before going?

Open the FanGass map at the top of this page: it places the beach within the eastern sector and shows its 0 to 5 rating, recalculated every morning from satellite imagery. One glance saves a wasted drive.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
