Sargassum at Sandy Beach (Vieux Fort): today's conditions
Clear
Chill, go
Sandy Beach stretches along the shore of Vieux Fort, at the southern tip of Saint Lucia, minutes from the island's international airport. Steady wind sweeps the bay year round, which is why kitesurfers share the sand with travellers squeezing in one last swim before a flight.
The beach is followed day after day: its 0 to 5 rating is reworked at first light, the southern sector fills the map and a few lines tell you what the sea is up to. Clear water, rafts offshore or weed already on the sand, you will know whether to rig a kite or head for a more sheltered coast.

What to know about this beach
Saint Lucia's southern sector sits halfway between two extremes. Facing south-east, Sandy Beach catches the Atlantic sargassum flow at an angle: it is spared the head-on arrivals that pound the east coast from Dennery to Micoud, yet it lacks the full screen that shields the Caribbean side. When the easterly trades load the sea with rafts, part of that drift slides past the island's southern tip and can settle here.
Within the same zone the beaches are not equal: Rudy John Beach in Laborie faces due south and stays a notch more sheltered than Vieux Fort. The reliable wind that makes this a kitesurfing spot is the same wind that carries the rafts, so at Sandy Beach the state of the ride and the state of the sand are read off the same morning map.
Frequently asked questions
How exposed is Sandy Beach to sargassum?
Moderately. Its south-east orientation takes the Atlantic flow at an angle: harder hit than the Caribbean coves of the west coast, clearly better off than the east coast. Week-to-week currents decide the rest.
Can you still kitesurf when sargassum is around?
During light arrivals, yes, especially once past the shore break where the weed thins out. A heavy landing makes launching from the beach unpleasant, so check the morning rating before rigging up.
Sandy Beach or Rudy John Beach during an arrival?
Rudy John in Laborie points due south and is a notch more sheltered than Vieux Fort. On days when Sandy Beach shows a middling rating, its neighbour in the same zone often fares slightly better.
When is the risk highest at Vieux Fort?
During the Caribbean arrival season, from spring to late summer. Outside those months deposits are rarer and shorter-lived, though a glance at the map is still worth it before the drive.
How do I check the beach from the airport or my hotel?
The FanGass map at the top of this page gives Sandy Beach and the southern sector a 0 to 5 rating, updated every morning. It is enough to choose between a quick swim and a straight transfer.
