Sargassum at Cattlewash Beach (Saint Joseph): this morning's picture

Today, October 30

Clear

All good

Immediately north of Bathsheba, Cattlewash unrolls one of the broadest stretches of sand on the Atlantic side of Barbados: tens of metres deep, bordered by the Ermie Bourne Highway, where Bajan families come to stroll at weekends facing the ocean.

Treat this page as your checkpoint before the drive over: an index running from 0 to 5 sums up the shoreline, the map sets Cattlewash within its sector, and the bulletin is redone each morning. You will see at a glance whether overnight tides left weed behind or the sand stayed clean.

What to know about this beach

The beach points east-north-east, opening slightly more toward due east than its neighbour, and takes the same relentless swell on an island standing as the forward sentry of the Antillean arc. Any sargassum raft riding the trade winds crosses this front before touching any other Barbadian shore.

Width is what changes the story on the ground: with close to fifty metres of sand between road and water, a landing spreads out instead of blocking the way, and a dry walking lane almost always remains on the land side. That is the mirror image of Bathsheba, where the same volume quickly saturates the narrow strip beneath the Soup Bowl rocks.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cattlewash get as much sargassum as Bathsheba?

Both open onto the same ocean and watch the same rafts go by. The difference plays out on the ground: Cattlewash's width dilutes a landing, while Bathsheba's narrow strip covers over much faster.

Can you still walk Cattlewash during a stranding?

Usually yes. Weed gathers near the waterline, and the depth of the beach keeps a lane open on the landward side. The morning rating published here tells you when an episode is out of the ordinary.

Is swimming the point at Cattlewash?

Seldom: swell, currents and shore break make it first a beach for long walks and picnics. Many visitors pair a stroll here with the photo stop at the Bathsheba rocks just to the south.

Which season should you watch on this coast?

Sargassum traffic generally concentrates from spring to the heart of summer. Standing in the Atlantic front line, Cattlewash feels it early in the season: a daily glance at the map is enough to plan around it.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
