Sargassum at Darkwood Beach (Crab Hill): today's status

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, dive in

Darkwood Beach runs right beside the coastal road in Antigua's south-west, near Crab Hill: park, cross a few metres of sand and you are in the water. That ease of access makes it a favourite stop on round-island drives and spur-of-the-moment swims.

This page lines up the useful markers before your break: a 0 to 5 score reassessed morning after morning, the beach's place on the Caribbean sector map and a note on what the latest satellite readings show between shore and open sea.

What to know about this beach

Darkwood closes off, to the south, the run of beaches that starts at Jolly Beach and passes Ffryes, just across a rocky point. Facing west, it enjoys the same screen: the whole island stands between it and the easterly trades, so the sargassum flow reaches the Atlantic front long before this shore.

Its signature is the road that skirts its full length, roughly five hundred metres: you can literally check the sand from the car. Sitting close to the island's south-western tip, though, it can pick up algae rounding the southern capes when currents allow, slightly ahead of its neighbours further north.

Frequently asked questions

Is Darkwood hit before Ffryes and Jolly?

Sometimes. Closer to the south-western tip, it is first in line for weed rounding the island's southern capes. The gap stays small: a few hours to a day, rarely more than that.

Can I judge the beach without leaving the car?

Yes, the coastal road runs along the entire strip and the sand is visible from the tarmac. The morning score still helps you anticipate: it includes what is drifting offshore and out of sight.

What is the best window during arrival season?

The west coast loads in short episodes rather than long sieges. Check the score at breakfast between April and August; outside that window, clear days are the overwhelming norm.

What does a sudden jump in the score mean here?

Usually a mat that has cleared the southern capes. The sector may then load from south to north, and the map shows whether Ffryes and Jolly are following or the episode stays local.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
