Sargassum at Jolly Beach (Jolly Harbour): today's picture

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, hit it

On Antigua's south-west coast, Jolly Beach rolls out more than 1.3 kilometres of pale sand beside the Jolly Harbour marina and residential complex. Families and long-swim regulars come for Caribbean water that stays gentle on most days of the year.

Before loading the car, one stop on this page sets the scene: the 0 to 5 rating assigned each morning, the western sector map and what the latest satellite imagery shows about weed offshore or already on the sand.

Jolly Beach on the sargassum map

What to know about this beach

Jolly Beach faces due west, at the heart of Antigua's Caribbean shoreline, the island's structural refuge from sargassum arrivals. The easterly trades that drive the drift blow from over the land here: rafts hit the opposite side of the island first, and only remnants ever work their way around the southern headlands.

Of the beaches tracked on this coast it is the longest, about 1,300 metres backed by a broad coastal plain. Ffryes Beach and then Darkwood Beach continue the same alignment a few kilometres further south, and the sector map lets you compare the three shores at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

Does Jolly Beach get sargassum in season?

Very little in most years. Facing due west on the island's sheltered flank, it needs an unusual run of currents and wind for a noticeable deposit to build, even at the height of the arrival season.

How does it compare with Ffryes Beach and Darkwood Beach?

All three share the west-facing exposure and the same monitored sector. Jolly Beach is the longest and the most developed; its shorter neighbours to the south appear on the same map for easy comparison.

Does the morning rating account for weed offshore?

Yes. The satellite analysis spots rafts before they reach land, so a rising score with no algae on the sand often means a mass is approaching the sector rather than already ashore.

Is swimming affected when the score climbs?

It depends on the level: up to 2, any nuisance stays local. Above that, check the map and head for the clearest stretch of coast, usually only a few minutes away by car.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
