Sargassum at Ffryes Beach (Antigua): today's check

Today, October 30

Clear

Pristine

Ffryes Beach fills a compact cove on Antigua's south-west coast: around five hundred metres of deep sand, green hills behind and far less concrete than its neighbours. Photographers and late-afternoon regulars treat it as a classic stop.

To decide whether today is the day, this page shows the 0 to 5 score set at first light, places the cove on the west-coast map and sums up what the satellite analysis has picked out: open water, scattered strands or a drifting mat.

What to know about this beach

Wedged between Jolly Beach to the north and Darkwood Beach just beyond the southern point, Ffryes Beach completes the string of sand along the Caribbean coast. Its due-west aspect keeps it leeward of the trades: the bulk of the sargassum flow tracks along the island's other face, and this cove only ever sees stragglers redirected by currents.

Its modest size, under five hundred metres from headland to headland, changes how an episode plays out: a patch that does slip in concentrates quickly instead of spreading thin. The upside is that moving to Darkwood or Jolly, both minutes away, is usually enough to find clear water again.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ffryes Beach more exposed than Jolly Beach?

They share the same west-facing aspect and the same shelter. Size makes the difference: being smaller, Ffryes concentrates an occasional deposit, while Jolly spreads the same amount along its length.

What if the cove is covered when I arrive?

Open the sector map: Darkwood Beach lies immediately south and Jolly Beach a few minutes north. It is uncommon for all three beaches to be affected on the same morning.

When is the score refreshed?

The bulletin is rebuilt every morning from the most recent satellite passes. Checking the page over breakfast gives you the truest picture of the day ahead.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
