Sargassum at Governor's Beach (Grand Turk): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, dive in

Governor's Beach lies along Waterloo Road, south of Cockburn Town on the western side of Grand Turk. Calm water, pale sand and direct access from the coastal road make it the island's classic spot for a full day out.

This page keeps watch on sargassum here: the sector's 0 to 5 rating, a map placing Governor's Beach on its coastline, and a reading refreshed each morning. Before you head down, you will know whether the shore is clear, whether rafts are drifting nearby or whether weed has started to pile up.

What to know about this beach

Facing south-west, Governor's Beach sits on the leeward side of Grand Turk. The island itself screens this shore from the east and south-east flow that carries sargassum across the tropical Atlantic, so the uncovered eastern coastline takes arrivals first while the water here reaches the sand filtered by the island's width.

Of the three beaches mapped on Grand Turk, this is the southernmost, a few kilometres below the town. Its south-west aspect sets it slightly apart from Cockburn Town Beach and Pillory Beach, which face due west: when a mat rounds the island by its southern tip, this stretch can catch material before its neighbours, while weed passing north of the island leaves it alone longer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Governor's Beach get much sargassum?

Not often, and rarely first. Sitting leeward of Grand Turk, it is screened from the easterly flow by the whole island. Deposits mostly happen when a mat rounds the southern tip and drifts up the west coast.

How can I check conditions before walking down?

The map at the top of the page shows the Grand Turk sector rating, recalculated every morning from satellite imagery. A quick look before leaving your hotel is enough to pick your beach.

How is it different from Cockburn Town Beach, just to the north?

Both share the same sheltered coast, but Governor's Beach faces south-west while the town beach faces due west. When weed comes around the southern tip, Governor's Beach may react a few hours earlier.

Is there a heavier season on Grand Turk?

Most regional arrivals happen between spring and late summer. On the west coast that season shows up as spaced-out episodes rather than a lasting presence on the sand.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
