Sargassum at Leeward Beach: this morning's picture

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, go

Leeward Beach is the quiet north-eastern end of Providenciales' great sand ribbon, past the last Grace Bay resorts and alongside the residential Leeward district. People come here for space, early walks and clear water rather than beach bars.

Before you head over, this page gives you the morning read: a 0 to 5 rating published daily, a map placing Leeward within its Providenciales sector, and the recent trend. You will know whether the sand is clear or whether rafts are hanging offshore.

What to know about this beach

Facing north-west, Leeward is if anything a touch more turned away from the sargassum stream than Grace Bay next door: the east-to-south-east flow works the far side of the island, and the barrier reef screens the seaward approach. Both beaches actually share one continuous sand bank of just over nine kilometres.

What sets Leeward apart is its corner position. It is the last stretch before the coast wraps around the north-east point toward the south-east shore, where Long Bay meets the flow head on. Weed sneaking around that corner can reach Leeward's far end first; the Sunset Beach public access makes an on-the-spot check easy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Leeward as sheltered as Grace Bay?

Broadly yes: same north-facing strip, same reef offshore, same back turned to the main flow. Its spot at the island's north-east corner makes it marginally more exposed to weed rounding the point.

Why track Leeward separately from Grace Bay?

Because a landing can pile up at one end of the nine-kilometre sand bank while the other stays spotless. The FanGass map, refreshed each morning, shows which end is concerned when something arrives.

How do I get onto the beach to see for myself?

The Sunset Beach public access leads straight onto this stretch. A quick stop confirms what the morning rating suggests, which is useful during arrival season.

When should I keep a closer eye on Leeward?

From spring through late summer, when Caribbean arrivals peak. Outside that window the north shore of Providenciales spends most of the year clear.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
