Sargassum at Heywoods Beach (Speightstown): this morning's state

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, go for it

Heywoods stretches north of Speightstown, Barbados' second town, against the Port St. Charles marina. It is the beach that closes the monitored sector of the sheltered shore at its northern end, reached from Highway 1B when you want space around your towel.

Each morning the sector is rated from 0 to 5 and the bulletin rebuilt: one figure, the map, and whatever changed since yesterday. One glance settles whether the day happens on this sand or a few bays further down the coast.

Heywoods Beach on the sargassum map

What to know about this beach

West-facing like the whole leeward ribbon, Heywoods hides behind the full screen of the island: most sargassum unloads on the windward front, from Bathsheba down to the south-east, without nearing this shore. The water off the beach ranks among the calmest in Barbados.

Its position at the very top of the strip adds one nuance: when a raft slips around the island's northern point, Heywoods stands among the first sheltered shores on its path, before it drifts on toward Mullins and Saint James. Such passages stay occasional, and the beach gives more elbow room than the small cove of Mullins to the south.

Frequently asked questions

Is Heywoods more exposed than the Saint James beaches?

Barely. It shares the same leeward shelter; its only quirk is its place at the very north, first in the path of the rare rafts that round the island's tip. The daily figure settles the question.

Can I combine Heywoods with a visit to Speightstown?

Easily: the town is minutes away, with its waterfront, galleries and fish restaurants. Read the figure at breakfast, then split the day between sand in the morning and strolling after lunch, or the reverse.

Why does the map also show Mullins and Holetown?

Because beaches of one sector rarely move in lockstep. If Heywoods picks up a passage of weed from the north, a spot a few kilometres down may stay clean: the map makes that call easy.

How strongly does sargassum season register here?

In a muted way: the busy months across the Caribbean arc translate here into a few short episodes rather than a settled presence. For the rest of the year the question rarely comes up.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
