Sargassum at Holetown Beach (Folkestone, Saint James): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, hit it

Holetown Beach runs beside the historic little town of Saint James, remembered as the first English landing place in Barbados. With restaurants, shops and the Folkestone marine park close by, the beach draws snorkelling families as much as regulars after a quiet swim.

A score of 0 to 5, assigned to the sector and refreshed at the start of every morning, tells you in one figure whether the water deserves mask and snorkel. The map completes the picture, placing Holetown among the other monitored points of the sheltered shore.

What to know about this beach

A local quirk: the beach faces south-west, set at a slight angle to the due-west bays around it. It still sits firmly on the Caribbean front, back turned to the trades, screened by the full thickness of the island: the Atlantic flow unloads on the windward coast long before reaching Saint James.

That southward tilt matters when algae work up the lee shore after rounding the island's southern tip: Holetown may then collect some slightly ahead of Mullins or Heywoods further north. And since the Folkestone marine park is explored face down in the water, clarity gets checked here more than anywhere else.

Frequently asked questions

Is snorkelling at Folkestone still possible when the score rises?

It depends on the level: a few surface strands will not stop you watching the reef, but a dense episode clouds the water and ruins visibility. The morning figure sets the trend before you grab the fins.

Why does Holetown face south-west when its neighbours face west?

The shoreline bends slightly at this point. It does not change the beach's leeward status, but it angles the bay a little differently toward the currents that run along the sheltered coast.

Holetown or Paynes Bay for today's swim?

Both belong to the same sheltered sector and usually post similar figures. Compare them on the map: a few kilometres are sometimes enough to trade a thread of weed for perfectly clean water.

Is the beach practical for half a day without a car?

Yes: Holetown's centre is walkable, the beach sits at the end of the street and west coast buses run along Highway 1. Check the figure over lunch, then cross when it reads green.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
