Sargassum at Long Beach (South Caicos): today's conditions
Clear
Easy, a few traces
Long Beach stretches nearly two kilometres along the eastern face of South Caicos, by the Sailrock Resort. Wild and lightly visited, it opens straight onto the open ocean, a world away from the town-side beaches of Grand Turk.
Treat this page as a daily checkpoint: the current level rated on a 0 to 5 scale, the eastern Caicos sector map and an update produced each morning. On a shoreline this exposed, that morning check is the difference between a great day and a wasted trip.
Long Beach (South Caicos) on the sargassum map
What to know about this beach
This is the most exposed beach of the group: a sand ribbon running two kilometres north to south and looking due east, straight at the ocean the flow arrives from. When a sargassum field moves through the region, Long Beach takes it first, with no island screen and no detour: the exact mirror image of Grand Turk's western shore.
That head-on exposure has a useful flip side: the beach works as an early indicator. A loaded shoreline at Long Beach usually announces movement for the rest of the eastern Caicos sector, while clean sand here is an excellent sign for the days ahead. The length of the strand also lets a deposit bunch up on one section and leave others walkable.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Long Beach so sensitive to sargassum?
Because it faces due east, straight at the open ocean that carries the mats. No land stands in the way: whatever the flow brings ends up on this shore, often before any other beach in the sector.
Is the morning rating enough to plan the day?
In most cases, yes: it is recalculated every morning from satellite imagery. On a windward beach like this one, check it the same day rather than the night before, since things can change fast.
Is the whole beach hit at once?
Not always. Over two kilometres of sand, a deposit can pile up on one section and leave the rest clear. Walking a few hundred metres is sometimes enough to find a clean stretch.
Is there a sheltered alternative near South Caicos?
Within the current coverage, the structural refuges are on Grand Turk's west coast, such as Governor's Beach or Cockburn Town Beach, both leeward. When Long Beach is loaded, those stretches often stay pleasant.
What does the sector map show?
Long Beach's position on the eastern face of the Caicos, the rating assigned to the sector and its recent trend. Enough to tell whether an episode is starting, peaking or winding down.
