Sargassum at Mudjin Harbour (Middle Caicos): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Chill, go

Mudjin Harbour is Middle Caicos at its most dramatic: a sandy cove tucked east of tall cliffs, facing the islet of Dragon Cay near the village of Conch Bar. The lookout above the Mudjin Cliffs makes it the signature stop of any drive across the island.

Before committing to the trip, glance at this page: it carries a 0 to 5 scale for the sector, the north-coast map and a status redone every morning. Better to learn over breakfast that the cove is loaded than to discover it at the end of the road.

What to know about this beach

The cove opens to the north-east, toward the Atlantic: it belongs to the ocean-facing side of the Caicos islands, partly sheltered by the barrier reef running off the north shore. That aspect leaves it open to arrivals from the north and north-east, far more than to the south-easterly flow, which mostly concerns Long Beach on South Caicos.

Local geography shapes what lands: Dragon Cay and the cliffs break the swell at the mouth of the cove, while the reef strains offshore part of whatever drifts on the surface. The double screen is not absolute: under a sustained northerly flow, clumps clear the gap and settle on the sandy side east of the bluffs.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mudjin Harbour get sargassum often?

The cove is open to the northern and north-easterly sides of the flow, but the barrier reef and the cliffs strain part of what arrives. Episodes do happen, mainly when the wind settles in the north-east for days.

Should I check before driving out from Conch Bar or further?

Yes: Middle Caicos takes some getting to, and it is better to know the cove is clear before setting off. The sector rating, rebuilt every morning, gives the trend in seconds.

Is the view from the Mudjin Cliffs still worth it during a landing?

The panorama over Dragon Cay and the coastline stays striking whatever the conditions. It is the swimming side, on the sand east of the cliffs, that really depends on the day's rating.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
