Sargassum at Paynes Bay (Saint James): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Pristine, dive in

Paynes Bay opens the string of polished beaches of Saint James, at the southern end of Barbados' west coast. Calm water, pale sand hugged by Highway 1, paddle and watersports bases: this is a swimming beach above all, busy from early morning until sunset.

Here the sargassum question takes one glance: every morning the bay collects its rating from 0 to 5, together with the western sector map and a short bulletin. You then pick your slot for a swim or a paddle session with a clear picture in mind.

What to know about this beach

Facing west over the Caribbean Sea, Paynes Bay belongs to the island's leeward front: the whole breadth of Barbados stands between it and the Atlantic flow that the trade winds press onto Bathsheba and the east coast. Direct arrivals here are the exception rather than the rule.

When weed does show up, it has made a long detour around the southern or northern tip of the island, carried by coastal currents. The sand strip is slim and every metre counts: even a modest deposit stands out quickly, yet it clears just as fast in this sheltered water.

Frequently asked questions

Is Paynes Bay really spared by sargassum?

Largely, yes: the bay looks over the Caribbean Sea on the lee side while the Atlantic front absorbs most arrivals. Residual episodes remain possible when a current carries weed around the island.

Can you paddle during an alert period?

The water often stays usable, since much of the weed passes offshore before touching land. Check the morning figure: up to 2, sessions go ahead as normal; above that, hug the coast and keep watching.

How different is Sandy Lane, just to the north?

The two bays nearly touch and share the same due-west aspect, so their exposure is practically identical. Choose on atmosphere, access and services rather than on the day's conditions.

Where can I see the rest of the west coast?

The map on this page covers the whole sector, from Paynes Bay up to Heywoods, each monitored beach with its own marker. Handy for shifting your day a few kilometres when one spot is less favourable.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
