Playa Chac Mool sits at the upper end of the Cancún hotel zone's ocean-facing side, just south of the bend the sandbar makes at Punta Cancún. Access runs straight off Boulevard Kukulcán, with no hotel to walk through, and the sand then carries on south without a break.

What to know about this beach
Chac Mool looks east into open water, along the axis of the trade winds that dominate much of the year. Rafts of sargassum drift down the Quintana Roo coast with the Caribbean current, and the wind then pushes them ashore: on this side of the sandbar the journey is short and nothing slows it.
Its position near the bend does change the picture. When the flow comes from the north-east, the point that closes the zone to the north intercepts some of the weed before it reaches the sand. When it backs round to the east or the south-east, that shelter vanishes. From one day to the next, Chac Mool can therefore read differently from beaches a few kilometres further south.

Is Chac Mool as exposed as the southern hotel zone beaches?
It faces east like its neighbours, but sitting just below the Punta Cancún headland gives it partial shelter when the flow comes from the north-east. Under a straight easterly wind, that difference disappears.

Can I walk to another beach from Chac Mool?
Yes. The sand continues north towards Gaviota Azul and south along the east-facing arm. A few hundred metres can be enough to find a different picture, especially as you approach the bend.
Which months bring the most strandings here?
The busy season usually runs from April to September, arriving in waves with quieter spells in between. For the rest of the year episodes become rare, though never entirely ruled out on this coast.
