What to know about this beach
Condado is an urban beach on Puerto Rico's north shore. Since the trades run from the east and north-east, most sargassum rafts pile onto the island's eastern facade first. What reaches San Juan has usually swung around the north-eastern corner and drifted west along the coast, which spaces out the episodes compared with the windward side.
The local twist is the shape of the shoreline. Rock outcrops and low structures cut the sand into pockets, so when weed does arrive it tends to gather in one sheltered corner while the next stretch stays open. Conditions can differ across a few hundred metres of the same beach, which is why a same-day reading beats a photo taken yesterday.
