Sargassum at Playa Paraíso (Tulum): today's sand conditions

Today, September 1

Heavy

Total mess

Playa Paraíso takes up a wide curve of sand north of the Tulum hotel zone, on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo. It is one of the deepest sections of shoreline here: the dry sand band is noticeably broader than on the beaches beside it, and the shore traces a steady arc facing east.

This page brings together what you want before walking down: sargassum observed this morning at Playa Paraíso, a 0 to 5 rating, and a map of the area for comparison with the rest of the Riviera Maya. The figures are picked up again each morning.

What to know about this beach

The curve of the shoreline is the decisive fact at Playa Paraíso. On an east-facing coast open to the trade winds, a concave arc behaves like a catchment: what the wind drives inshore tends to converge on the middle of the bay, while one end can stay clear on the very same morning.

Width adds to that. When a raft is dropped high on the dry sand, the sea does not take it back on the next tide cycle, and the deposit can sit there until a stronger swell reaches it. That is why recovery after an episode is sometimes slower here than on a narrow beach where every tide sweeps the full profile.

Frequently asked questions

Why does sargassum gather at Playa Paraíso?

The arc of the beach funnels whatever the easterly trades push shoreward towards its centre. The ends of the curve can look clearer than the middle, even on a day with modest arrivals.

How should I check before coming?

The 0 to 5 rating and the FanGass map are updated each morning for Playa Paraíso. Look when you wake up, then choose between this beach and one of its neighbours.

Is the beach wider than the rest of Tulum?

Yes, the strip of dry sand runs deeper here than along most of the coast. That is comfortable for settling in, but weed left high on the beach takes longer to wash away on its own.

Where else can I go if today's rating is poor?

Santa Fe and Playa Pescadores, a few hundred metres north, have a narrower profile and sometimes rinse clear faster. The map lets you compare ratings before making the trip.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
