Playa Ruinas is the small pocket of sand at the foot of the cliff, below the Tulum archaeological site. You reach it by the stairway that drops from the ruins, and the cove is far shorter than the long beaches of the hotel zone to the south.

What to know about this beach
The cove faces east, straight at the open Caribbean, on a stretch where limestone cliff meets the sea. Trade winds carry sargassum rafts towards this shore with nothing in the way, and the usable sand is limited to a pocket boxed in by rock.
That has two consequences. Whatever arrives is concentrated on a small surface, so an equal volume of weed looks denser here than along the kilometres of sand in the hotel zone. And because the beach lies inside the archaeological site rather than in front of hotels, daily raking is less systematic than on private beachfronts. The rating on this page applies to that pocket, not to Tulum as a whole.
