Sargassum at Reggae Beach, Tower Isle: where things stand today

Today, September 1

First bulletin for this beach lands with tomorrow morning’s update.

Reggae Beach occupies a cove at Tower Isle, on the coast road between Ocho Rios and Oracabessa, in Saint Mary. You reach it by turning off the main road and dropping down to a bay set into the island's north shore.

This page gives sargassum at Reggae Beach for the day: a score from 0 to 5, a map of this section of coast, and a fresh reading posted each morning. Since getting here means a drive and a detour, it is worth a look before you set off from Ocho Rios or from Oracabessa.

What to know about this beach

The shoreline faces due north, in a cove that opens to the sea with nothing standing in front of it. There is no equivalent of the headland that shields Ocho Rios Bay, so surface movement arriving from the north or northeast reaches this sand with little to slow it down.

Position within the zone matters too. Tower Isle lies east of Ocho Rios, which puts it upstream on the westward path material follows along the Saint Mary coast. Places upstream tend to register an episode before the beaches in the next bay along. Sitting on the island's Caribbean side moderates all of this, but it is no reason to skip the morning reading before committing to the drive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Reggae Beach more exposed than the Ocho Rios beaches?

Its cove faces due north with no protective point in front, and Tower Isle sits upstream on the westward drift. Episodes often show up here before they reach the bay at Ocho Rios.

How can I check conditions before making the drive?

The FanGass page for Reggae Beach publishes a 0 to 5 score and an updated map every morning. One look before leaving Ocho Rios saves a wasted round trip on a bad day.

When are arrivals most likely along this coast?

The Caribbean peak generally runs from spring into late summer, with seasons varying widely. Within a single holiday, the gap between two days is often larger than the gap between two months.

Does wind direction matter on a north-facing cove?

It does. A firm northerly or northeasterly pushes floating material into the back of the cove, while a straight easterly tends to run along the coast instead of entering. The daily score reflects those conditions.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
