Sargassum at San Pedro Beach: today's conditions on Ambergris Caye

Heavy pile-up, skip it

San Pedro Beach fronts the main town of Ambergris Caye, Belize's busiest island, where wooden piers, dive boats and beach bars line the sand. For most visitors it is the first stretch of Caribbean shore they see after stepping off the water taxi or the small plane.

San Pedro Beach gets its daily sargassum check here: the 0 to 5 rating lands every morning, the sector map shows where the beach sits, and a brief status note separates clear sand from rafts at sea or weed actually washing in.

What to know about this beach

The beach faces due east toward the barrier reef, which runs close offshore and takes the edge off the swell. The reef also strains out part of the incoming sargassum, yet it is no wall: pushed west by the trade winds, rafts that cross it land on this east-facing shore before anywhere else on the caye.

In the town centre the sand is narrow and broken up by piers, so even a modest landing shows quickly between moored boats and restaurant decks. Boca del Rio to the north and Mar de Tumbo to the south sit on the same exposed facade, while Secret Beach, over on the lagoon side, stays out of the direct flow and makes an easy fallback by golf cart.

Frequently asked questions

Does the reef keep sargassum away from San Pedro Beach?

Only partly. The barrier reef softens the swell and strains out some of the rafts, but material carried on the easterlies still gets through the cuts. San Pedro's shore remains the island's front line.

Where can I go when the town beach is covered?

Swap coasts. Secret Beach, on the western lagoon shore, is screened by the full width of Ambergris Caye and usually stays clear: it is a short golf cart ride from the centre of town.

How do I check the sand before leaving my hotel?

The score at the top of this page is recalculated every morning for San Pedro Beach and its sector. One glance with your coffee tells you whether to head for the piers or cross to the lagoon side.

Do Boca del Rio and Mar de Tumbo behave like San Pedro Beach?

Most days, yes: all three sit on the same east-facing seaboard behind the reef. Day-to-day differences come from currents, which can load one stretch of sand while sparing the next.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
