Sargassum at Secret Beach: today's conditions on the lagoon side

Today, October 30

Clear

Chill, go for it

Secret Beach stopped being a secret some time ago: this patch of sand on the western shore of Ambergris Caye, reached by a cart track across the island, has grown into one of its favourite gathering spots. The water is shallow, calm and lagoon-flat for a long way out.

Sargassum works differently on this side, and the page reflects that: each morning it posts the sector's score on a scale of 0 to 5, alongside the map, confirming the flats are clean or flagging the occasional day when strands sneak around the island.

What to know about this beach

Everything about Secret Beach follows from its orientation. It faces west over the inner lagoon, and the windward coast lies about three kilometres behind it: the full width of Ambergris Caye screens this shore from the open sea, making it the sector's structural refuge.

While San Pedro, Boca del Rio and Mar de Tumbo absorb the season's arrivals on the ocean side, the lagoon usually stays untouched. Exceptions happen: weed drifting through the passes can settle on this bank, and in water this shallow it lingers in plain sight. A quick check of the morning score before driving across saves the trip on those rare days.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Secret Beach stay clear so often?

Because it faces away from the flow. Looking west over the lagoon, it is shielded by the entire width of Ambergris Caye, with the exposed windward coast about three kilometres behind it.

Can sargassum still reach Secret Beach?

Rarely, but it happens: strands that round the island or slip through the cuts can drift onto the lagoon bank. In water this shallow, even a small deposit stays visible until it breaks up.

How do I get to Secret Beach from San Pedro?

A track crosses the island, usually covered by golf cart. Before setting off, glance at the sector score at the top of the page: it confirms on most days that the west shore is clean.

Does Secret Beach score the same as San Pedro Beach?

Not necessarily. The two beaches share a sector but face opposite horizons: the ocean side can be loaded while the lagoon sits flat and clear, and the map shows that split day by day.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
