Sargassum at The Split: today's conditions on Caye Caulker
Moderate
Visible sargassum, meh
The Split is the northern tip of Caye Caulker's southern island, where a sea channel slices the caye in two. People swim in the pool-like passage, leap from the edge and settle in for sunset: by late afternoon this is the social heart of the village shoreline.
Before committing your afternoon, one look at this page does the job: it posts the site's grade each morning, from 0 to 5, sets it on the Caye Caulker map and flags drifting rafts or weed gathering along the channel banks as soon as they show.

What to know about this beach
The geometry here is unusual. Facing north into the channel that divides the two halves of the caye, The Split does not stare straight at open water, so it sits slightly out of line from the frontal easterly arrivals that the village's ocean-facing shore meets at reef level.
That offset is relative. Current funnelling through the cut can carry in whatever drifts along the caye, and the built-up banks sometimes hold patches that an open beach would release. Caye Caulker Village Beach, a few hundred metres south, makes a handy reference point: on many mornings the two spots tell different stories.
Frequently asked questions
Is The Split protected from sargassum by its position?
Partly. Facing north into the channel, it dodges the head-on easterly arrivals that strike the village's ocean shore. Current running through the cut can still deliver patches drifting along the caye.
Can I swim at The Split when the east coast of Caye Caulker is affected?
Often, yes: the channel reacts later than the exposed facade. Check the morning grade on this page and look along the banks first, since that is where loose weed tends to collect.
How different is The Split from Caye Caulker Village Beach?
A few hundred metres and an opposite outlook. The village beach faces the reef due east and meets the flow first, while The Split watches the channel: their ratings can part ways on the same day.
