Balneario de Boquerón is the long public beach at the head of Boquerón Bay, in the Cabo Rojo municipality on Puerto Rico's southwest corner. Palms, municipal facilities and a wide strip of sand face due west, out toward the Mona Passage.

What to know about this beach
Western Puerto Rico stands with its back to the trade winds, and Boquerón benefits from that. Sargassum rafts travel east to west with the wind and the currents carrying them, so the first coasts they meet are Fajardo, the southeast and the south. Reaching a west facing bay means wrapping around the island's headlands, and much of the material never makes that trip.
Bay shape then takes over from exposure. The balneario lies at the back of an almost enclosed body of water: ocean swell arrives softened, but whatever drifts through the mouth of the bay flushes out slowly and can sit along the shoreline for days. Afternoon sea breezes blowing onshore tend to push anything already floating inside closer to the sand.

Why does Boquerón usually see less sargassum than eastern Puerto Rico?
Rafts ride the easterly trades, so they hit Fajardo, Humacao and the southeast first. A west facing bay only receives what drifts around the island, which removes a large share of the incoming weed.

Playa Buyé a few kilometres north and Playa Sucia to the south, near the Los Morrillos lighthouse, sit in the same municipality but face different directions, so their daily scores often differ from this one.
