Sargassum at Balneario Punta Guilarte (Arroyo): today's conditions

Today, September 1

First bulletin for this beach lands with tomorrow morning’s update.

Balneario Punta Guilarte sits on the Arroyo coast, on the southern side of Puerto Rico, west of Patillas. This page publishes the sargassum situation at Punta Guilarte: how the shore looks today, a 0 to 5 rating that sums it up, and a map placing the beach within the stretch running from Arroyo to Yabucoa.

The tracking restarts every morning. Before leaving you know whether the sand is clean, whether a line of weed edges the water, or whether a larger landing is under way. A glance at the map then sets Arroyo against its neighbours along the southern shore.

What to know about this beach

Punta Guilarte is the westernmost beach in this group, which puts it downstream of the route the weed follows: the Caribbean current runs east to west, and anything that has cleared the Maunabo point arrives here after a long run, usually broken up. The south coast is the island's lee side as well, out of the Atlantic swell.

The southeast aspect softens that advantage, reopening the beach to the easterly component of the wind, and a point that catches floating mats can concentrate deposits on one side of the shore. Punta Guilarte is a managed public beach that gets raked, which changes how quickly the sand is back in shape.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Punta Guilarte see less sargassum than the east coast?

It lies on the sheltered southern side and west of the path the mats follow. Whatever reaches it has already tracked along much of the coastline and usually arrives scattered.

How do I check the balneario before coming?

Load this page in the morning. The 0 to 5 rating and the map of the Arroyo area are republished daily, together with the state recorded along the Punta Guilarte shoreline.

Which beach should I check alongside Punta Guilarte?

Patillas, just east, shares the same southern side but opens southwest. Comparing the two daily ratings gives a fair idea of the direction the weed is arriving from.

Does beach cleaning change what I find on site?

A public balneario is maintained regularly, so a light deposit can be gone within the day. A heavy landing quickly outpaces that rhythm and stays visible until the sea takes it back.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
