Sargassum at Cemetery Beach (Grand Cayman): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, hit it

At the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, Cemetery Beach takes its everyday name from the small West Bay cemetery sitting just behind the sand. Regulars prize this stretch for two things the busier central strand cannot match: elbow room, and a reef close enough to reach from shore.

FanGass sums up each day here with a single number, rated 0 to 5, plus a map placing Cemetery Beach within its coastal sector. The reading is rebuilt every morning from the latest satellite imagery, so a glance tells you whether to pack the snorkel or sleep in.

What to know about this beach

One quirk of geography sets this spot apart: the shoreline bends at the top of the strand, so Cemetery Beach faces southwest rather than due west like the middle of Seven Mile. The essentials hold, though: it stays leeward of the trade winds, screened by the bulk of Grand Cayman, in a sector whose default score sits at 0 or 1.

The monitoring point lies in the Battle Ground area of West Bay, barely eight metres from the waterline, on the northern portion where the sand still holds its original width. A mapping curiosity: no official feature carries the name Cemetery Beach; only the adjacent cemetery pins the spot down, which says plenty about its word-of-mouth reputation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called Cemetery Beach?

Because of the West Bay cemetery directly behind the beach, along the coastal road. The name is pure local habit: it appears on no official sign or map, yet everyone on Grand Cayman knows exactly which stretch of sand you mean.

Does sargassum reach this northern end of Seven Mile?

Seldom. Even angled to the southwest, the beach remains sheltered from the easterly flow that hits Colliers and the south shore first. The sector's score stays at 0 or 1 unless a local source names a specific stranding.

Is the snorkelling affected by sargassum here?

That is the main reason to check before coming: the reef is reachable by swimming straight out, and a stranding would spoil the entry. The morning rating settles the question in seconds, even in a sector this calm.

Cemetery Beach or the Public Beach: which should I pick?

Same sector, same exposure, different moods. The Public Beach in the centre offers a park and facilities; Cemetery Beach up north trades that for quiet and the reef. The FanGass map covers both at a single glance.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
