Sargassum at Smith Cove (Smith Barcadere): today's status
Clear
Pristine
Tucked into the south-west corner of George Town, Smith Cove, Smith Barcadere to Caymanians, is a pocket of sand set between limestone rocks a few minutes from the capital. It serves the Rock Hole neighbourhood as its local swimming hole and gives visitors an easy alternative to the big resort beaches.
The daily drill on this page is quick: one number on a 0 to 5 scale for the cove, a map locating it within Grand Cayman's south-east sector, and a verdict rebuilt each morning once new satellite imagery has been read. Perfect for a midweek swim decision.

What to know about this beach
Smith Cove belongs to the zone that meets the easterly flow first. Colliers, on the eastern façade, takes the regional stream head-on; the south shore at Spotts follows close behind; and this southwest-facing nook comes in a notch below Spotts. Sitting at the island's corner softens the exposure without cancelling it.
The telling detail is in the coastline itself: the cove locally faces southwest, yet within a few hundred metres the shore already swings hard toward the west. That makes Smith Cove a hinge between the exposed southern coast and the sheltered western façade, and explains why it can stay clean on days when Spotts is collecting weed.
Frequently asked questions
Are Smith Cove and Smith Barcadere the same place?
Yes. Smith Barcadere is the historic local name, Smith Cove the one visitors use. Both refer to the same small sandy cove south of George Town, in the Rock Hole neighbourhood.
Is Smith Cove more exposed than Seven Mile Beach?
Considerably: it belongs to the south-east sector, the first to meet the easterly flow, while Seven Mile is the sheltered west-coast refuge. Within its own sector, though, it ranks as the least exposed spot, behind Colliers and Spotts.
What should I check on the map before going?
The cove's own rating, plus the one for Spotts: once Spotts starts collecting weed, Smith Cove may follow. If the whole south-east sector climbs, the map points you to the west coast on the other side of George Town.
Is the cove good for swimming on low-score days?
That is its charm: at 0 or 1 the water in this rocky nook is clear and calm, ideal for a swim or a mask. On high-score mornings, Seven Mile Beach is a short drive away and almost always clearer.
