Sargassum at Seven Mile Public Beach: today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Pristine, dive in

Seven Mile Public Beach is the best known entry point to Grand Cayman's famous western strand: a public park on the sand in West Bay district, roughly midway along the beach, where island families and visitors mix on calm, west-facing water.

FanGass watches this shore every day. The page above shows a rating from 0 to 5 for the Seven Mile sector, a map that places the Public Beach among its neighbours, and a reading refreshed each morning from satellite imagery, so you know before leaving whether the sand is clear.

Seven Mile Public Beach on the sargassum map

What to know about this beach

Facing due west, the Public Beach sits on the sheltered side of Grand Cayman. The island itself blocks the easterly trade winds that carry sargassum rafts across the Caribbean, so scores here hover at 0 or 1 by default and only climb when a landing is specifically reported. When Colliers on the east coast or Spotts on the south shore take a hit, this coast is the island's natural plan B.

The access point also lies on the central stretch of the strand, where the sand has kept its full width: the southern half of Seven Mile Beach has retreated markedly with erosion, while around the public park the beach still runs tens of metres deep. A shaded shelter stands right by the entrance, a few steps from the waterline.

Frequently asked questions

Does Seven Mile Public Beach get sargassum often?

Very little. This west-facing, leeward sector is Grand Cayman's structural refuge: ratings stay between 0 and 1 most of the year and rise only when a specific stranding is reported by a local source.

Is this part of Seven Mile Beach still wide?

Yes. The Public Beach sits on the central section, where the sand has held its width, while the southern half of the strand has visibly narrowed. It is one of the roomiest spots on the west coast for a full beach day.

Where should I go if the east coast is covered in weed?

Head here. When Colliers at East End or the southern shore around Spotts receive the easterly flow, the west coast usually stays clear. Check the morning rating on the map above before driving across the island.

When is the rating updated?

Every morning, after fresh satellite imagery of the Seven Mile sector has been analysed. One look at breakfast time is enough to plan the day for the whole western coast.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
