Sargassum at Colliers Beach (East End): today's conditions

Today, October 30

Clear

Easy, a few traces

Colliers Beach opens Grand Cayman's eastern façade, in the quiet district of East End, far from the bustle of George Town. Pale sand, a reef-fringed lagoon and small villages: this is the island's other face, the one that looks straight out over the open Caribbean Sea.

It is also the beach FanGass watches most closely, because its number, graded from 0 to 5, sets the tempo for the whole island. Sector map, satellite imagery analysis and a morning refresh: everything here is built to tell you what the east is receiving before you plan the day.

Colliers Beach on the sargassum map

What to know about this beach

Facing due east, Colliers Beach is first in line when the regional sargassum flow reaches Grand Cayman: nothing stands between it and the rafts the trade winds push across the Caribbean. In the island's pecking order, East End absorbs the regional stream at full strength, the south shore around Spotts comes next, and the west coast stays out of it.

Being the sentinel has an upside: reading the Colliers number in the morning hints at what the rest of the island can expect over the following days. Grand Cayman is low-lying and ringed by reef, so mats pile up against the barrier before any of it reaches the sand, and an active episode can often be seen building from the beach itself.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Colliers Beach the most exposed beach on Grand Cayman?

Because it faces east, the direction the trade winds push sargassum rafts from. No relief and no other coastline shields it: whatever regional flow touches the island makes landfall at East End first.

Does the Colliers rating predict the rest of the island?

Often, yes. When Colliers climbs, the south coast from Spotts to Smith Cove may follow, while the Seven Mile west coast usually stays clear. That is why the FanGass map shows the sectors side by side.

Does the reef protect the beach from strandings?

It delays them more than it prevents them: mats hang on the barrier first, then part of the weed works its way to the shore with wind and swell. A low morning number can therefore worsen during the day in an active spell.

Does the Colliers rating cover the whole eastern façade?

It describes Grand Cayman's south-east sector, of which Colliers is the most exposed point. The Sister Islands, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, also face east-south-east and see comparable arrivals whenever the regional flow picks up.

Should I skip East End during sargassum season?

No, but check the night before and again in the morning: arrivals come in waves, with genuine calm windows between episodes. The daily 0 to 5 rating lets you pick your moment instead of writing off this side of the island.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
